Useful Tips

  • Be brave and jump on a combi to make your way around town like a local. Destinations are written on the side of the van, or just listen for the route as the attendant shouts it into the streets.
  • While the Costa Verde beaches in Lima are beautiful during the day, avoid them after dark as it is poorly lit and they’re well known for robberies.
  • While you’re on the coast take advantage of the fresh seafood and try the Peruvian version of ‘Ceviche’ – a popular dish made of fish ‘cooked’ in a cocktail of fresh-squeezed lime juice, spicy chili, and red onion. It’s best enjoyed at lunch when the fish is fresh.
  • Even if you don’t speak fluent Spanish, Peruvians always appreciate it if you make an effort to learn the basics such as please (por favor), thank you (gracias), and you’re welcome (de nada). Don’t forget that a smile will help as well when you’re at a loss for words!
  • Watch the Pacific sunset from Parque del Amor amongst pairs of enamored locals surrounded by beautiful mosaic-tiled benches.
  • Traditional handicrafts and silver jewelry can be found in the Indian Market on Av. Petit Thouars.
  • For listings of music gigs, art exhibitions, theatre and more, check out Ovejo Negro (www.revistaovejanegra.com), a monthly guide to all things entertaining and cultural in Lima.
  • Be cautious when crossing the road (even at crosswalks!) as cars usually command the right-of-way.
  • If you’re taking a taxi try to take an official yellow taxi or go to any hotel and order one from there. Prices are negotiable and if you’re not sure what the fare to your destination should be, just ask a local.
  • Try some locally produced organic food and handicrafts at the BioFeria Organica market in Parque Reducto every Saturday from 8:30AM to 3:30PM. The park provides a beautiful setting to enjoy your purchases in or to just spend some time browsing the colourful market.
  • For a night out with good music and dancing, head to the historic and slightly bohemian district of Barranco.
  • Central Lima is home to some beautiful architecture and historic sites, but it’s best enjoyed during the light of day to ensure your safety.
